Lyric Family Favorites: January 15

If you're headed into this January weekend craving a soothing song, Maria is here for you. Enjoy this rendition of the wistful "Somewhere" from Lyric's 2019 production of West Side Story, featuring Mikaela Bennett as Maria. Leonard Bernstein's graceful melody borrows a phrase from the slow second movement of Beethoven's Emperor Concerto, which melds beautifully with Stephen Sondheim's evocative lyrics in one of Broadway's most memorable songs.

Then, read on for programs that the Art Institute of Chicago offers to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, including a new video work by interdisciplinary artist avery r. young, who will write the texts for and narrate Lyric’s Spring 2021 production of Twilight: Gods; mark your calendar to watch members of our Ryan Opera Center in upcoming programs; and read about opera streams from around the world that you can enjoy from your own home.
