The immortal tale of the restless, free-spirited heroine and Don José, the soldier who's drawn to her in a truly "fatal attraction," Carmen has long been one of the world's favorite operas. It returns this season in the company's vividly colorful, powerfully dramatic production with dynamic Ryan Opera Center alumna J'Nai Bridges, who is now enjoying a dazzling career internationally, in the title role. Partnering with her is Charles Castronovo, one of the world's most acclaimed tenors. You'll be drawn to the drama like moth to flame as this alluring opera brings you along to its edge-of-your-seat ending.

Following the performance on Sunday, April 2, J'Nai Bridges, the star of Lyric's production, will be joined in conversation by pre-opera lecturer, Cynthia Clarey, a retired professor and opera singer who performed the role in countless productions in some of the world's most prominent opera houses. This discussion will provide an inside look at how embodying one of opera's most famed tragic heroines has changed in recent history, as well as an exploration of how a piece written about a Romani woman has evolved into a showcase of many of opera's greatest Black mezzo-sopranos. Northwestern professor Melissa Foster will moderate this insightful conversation.

Pre-opera talk

Join us in the Ardis Krainik Theatre one hour before your opera performance begins for a free, 30-minute preview talk discussing that day’s production.

Seating is unreserved, but a ticket for that day’s performance is required. Talks begin one hour before each performance and doors open approximately 15 minutes before the start of the talks.
