The path to damnation never sounded so sweet Don Giovanni

The Lyric Opera of Chicago 2026/27 Season kicks off with a thrilling fable of deceit and retribution. Under the baton of Music Director Enrique Mazzola, sharp humor, high drama, and an exquisite score intertwine in the story of a charismatic seducer whose unrepentant lustfulness brings about a most spectacular demise.

Singing with a voice that can “shake the heavens” (Opera Today), bass-baritone and Lyric veteran Christian Van Horn stars as one of opera’s most infamous anti-heroes, crowning a stellar cast.

Director Robert Falls’s instant-classic take on this morality tale for the ages offers an expansive and hard-hitting Don Giovanni sure to satisfy anyone with a wicked taste for drama.

Audio-described performance

Audio-described performances include a narration which guides the listener through the presentation with concise, objective descriptions of new scenes, settings, costumes, and body language, communicated to the patron through headphones at appropriate times throughout the performance. Devices may be borrowed from coat check 1 on the main floor.
ASL-interpreted performance

All dialogue and lyrics will be translated into American Sign Language by two certified interpreters located near the stage. Select seats are reserved to give you the best sight lines to follow the interpretation and all the action on stage.

Join us in the Ardis Krainik Theatre one hour before your opera performance begins for a free, 30-minute preview talk discussing that day’s production.

Seating is unreserved, but a ticket for that day’s performance is required. Talks begin one hour before each performance and doors open approximately 15 minutes before the start of the talks.

Director's note: Robert Falls on "Don Giovanni"

When I first began work on this production of "Don Giovanni" in 2013, I certainly never imagined that I would have the opportunity to return to it twice more. One of the pleasures — and surprises — of revisiting a great work is discovering how remarkably malleable it can be. The notes of the score remain the same, the words remain the same, and yet the opera somehow changes. Or perhaps we change, and consequently hear and see different things in it. Every time I return to "Don Giovanni", it reveals something different.
