Curtain TimeOpera has a tradition of starting promptly and unlike theatre or movies the doors to the house are closed promptly at curtain time. We realize situations arise that can delay your arrival and we will try to accommodate latecomers in an available section of the house or at a pre-determined break which may be intermission. Video screens are available in the lobby so you won’t miss a moment of the performance.
Please be aware that patrons who must leave their seats during a performance will not be readmitted into the house until intermission or a suitable break.

Ticket Exchanges and DonationsIf a date conflict arises you may exchange your tickets for another performance of the same opera online, by phone or by mail/fax (fees apply).
Lyric accepts ticket donations if you do not plan on using your seats for a performance and will issue a tax-deductible receipt for your records Although we would appreciate your ticket donation as soon as possible, we can accept calls as late as five minutes prior to curtain at 312.827.5600. A personalized statement of all ticket donations will be e-mailed to you in January for the previous calendar year. For more detailed information about donations visit Ticket Information.
The use of a ticket acknowledges a willingness to appear in photographs or video taken for print, television, or film in the public areas of the theater and releases Lyric Opera of Chicago from liability resulting from the use of such photographs.
AccessibilityLyric strives to make the opera experience accessible for all patrons by providing services for those who may need assistance. Services include accessible seating for those in wheelchairs, FM and Telecoil loop assisted listening devices, audio described performances, and additional services to enhance your experience.

SecurityLyric's highest priority is to ensure the safety, security, and enjoyment of its guests. In addition to Lyric's experienced ushers and senior house staff, Lyric employs highly trained security personnel for all performances and special events. We are dedicated to constant observation, taking appropriate actions where necessary, and ongoing monitoring of all audiences to ensure safety and comfort for all. Lyric has also engaged the specialized services of a security consultant to continually assess and recommend changes to Lyric's security procedures for the future.
Mobile Phones and Electronic DevicesWe request that patrons turn off their cellular phones, pagers, and electronic beepers (including watches and medical devices) before the performance begins.
Please refrain from texting and using your mobile device during the performance which can disrupt your neighbors and their experience. We know you want to share your experience and encourage it, however, please wait until intermission or the end of the performance to tweet, text, and update your Facebook status.
Cameras and RecordingCameras and recording equipment are not allowed in the seating area of the Civic Opera House. We also ask patrons to refrain from using mobile devices (mobile phone, ipad, etc.) to photograph or record performances.
RefreshmentsRefreshments are available before performances and during intermissions throughout the Civic Opera House.
For your convenience we offer a pre-ordering service for our patrons and your refreshments will be waiting for you at intermission. Place your order at one of the bars in the lobby or the hostess station in the restaurant. Refreshments are available at intermission of all performances in the lobby, The Sarah and Peer Pedersen Room and Florian Opera Bistro. Outside food and beverages may not be brought into the Civic Opera House (bottled water is permitted).

Bags and LuggageLyric Opera requires that any bag that will not fit on your lap be checked at Coat Checks on floors 1, 2, 3 and 5 during the performance. There is a $2 charge for all checked items including coats, bags and luggage. Lyric reserves the right to search bags for security reasons.
Additional RemindersPlease use moderation when applying perfumes, hairsprays, colognes, lotions, and other scented toiletries when attending the opera, as allergies are commonplace.
Many operas contain adult themes. It is best to make sure that the material is appropriate for their age or maturity level before bringing children to a performance.
The Overture is part of the performance. As a courtesy to the orchestra and fellow patrons please refrain from talking at this point.
In accordance with the City of Chicago's Clean Indoor Air Act, Lyric Opera of Chicago has adopted a no-smoking policy throughout the Opera House at all times. Thank you for your cooperation.
Coat CheckFor your convenience, coat checks are available on floors 1, 2, 3 and 5. For the safety and comfort of our audience, we request that you check all large parcels, backpacks, luggage, etc. at one of the available coat checks. There is a $2 charge for all checked items.
A wide selection of Lyric-themed items, as well as collectibles are available at the Lyric Opera Shop located in the lobby.
The Civic Opera House has an EMT on site for all opera performances. In case of illness or injury, please inform an usher.
Lost + Found
Please call 312.827.5768 and leave a message with your contact information, the performance date you attended, and a detailed description of your item. If it was turned into Lost and Found we will contact you. Unclaimed articles are held for 30 days.
As a courtesy to our patrons, complimentary phone service is available in the Vaughan Family Hospitality Foyer and on the second and fourth floors.
