Spotlight on Christine Goerke

If you're an opera fan who loves epic works, you've probably crossed paths with soprano Christine Goerke, a true dramatic soprano of the highest order and one of opera's most acclaimed powerhouse stars. She's a favorite with Lyric audiences, who last saw her as Brünnhilde in Twilight: Gods, the company's innovative, drive-through reimagining of Wagner's Götterdämmerung in 2021. Her winged horse was, in this case, a vintage red 1965 Mustang convertible, her soaring vocals dazzling audiences after taking on Die Walküre and Siegfried in the company's new Ring cycle during previous seasons. 

On November 20 and 22, Lyric audiences will have a chance to hear the star shine once again in Wagner: Myth and Music. A concert presentation featuring the full forces of the Lyric Opera Orchestra and Chorus performing popular selections from Tannhäuser, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, and Parsifal, the program also showcases Goerke with the Prelude & Liebestod from Tristan und Isolde and the Immolation Scene from Götterdämmerung. It promises a treat not just for Wagner fans, but for anyone who appreciates the soprano voice at the height of its powers.

Goerke’s vocal beauty and power, matched by exceptional musicality and electrifying stage presence, has made her a major star of prestigious opera companies throughout the world. The most formidable roles in the repertoire are simply her greatest forte.

Recent seasons have featured Goerke taking on the demanding dramatic-soprano repertoire of Wagner and Strauss, with a handful of Turandots added in for good measure. In 2022 she sang Brünnhilde in Die Walküre as part of Detroit Opera's Wagner project, continuing the role that had already established her as one of the leading Wagnerian sopranos of her generation. She returned to Die Walküre in Atlanta in Spring of 2024, stepping in as a much-lauded late replacement.

Goerke sang Ortrud, the antagonist in Lohengrin, at the Metropolitan Opera in 2023, a role she had previously sung at Deutsche Oper Berlin, Royal Ballet and Opera, and Houston Grand Opera. And while the role requires all the Wagnerian demands, her Kundry in Parsifal at Houston Grand Opera in 2023/24 amply demonstrated her versatility; significantly different from Brünnhilde and Ortrud, Kundry moves between sensuality, despair, grotesque comedy, and spiritual suffering. 

That same season, Goerke sang the title role in Elektra at the Vienna State Opera — perhaps the perfect showcase for her dramatic gifts. Strauss's writing requires sustained intensity, a huge vocal range, and the ability to convey a character consumed by grief and revenge. Her thrilling performances in the role have been seen in most of the major opera houses of the world.

A recent highlight, from May 2026, was yet another traversal of Brünnhilde in Die Walküre, this time in concert performances with the Los Angeles Philharmonic under Gustavo Dudamel, part of the conductor’s valedictory season. 

Goerke hails from New York State, and in high school she was a wind player (clarinet and saxophone). Once she discovered opera, things moved pretty fast. She went through the highly competitive Glimmerglass and St. Louis young artist programs before entering the Lindemann Young Artist Development program at the Met. Though her potential as a leading dramatic soprano was evident, she wisely resisted jumping into that repertoire too soon, building her reputation initially as a singer of Gluck, Handel, and Mozart. As her voice grew, so did her repertoire, with successes in roles as varied as Alice Ford/Falstaff and Mme. Lidoine/Dialogues of the Carmelites.

There came a moment when the big German roles beckoned to a voice that was ready for them. The turning point — the moment when the world knew that a dramatic-soprano star had truly arrived — was perhaps the Dyer’s Wife in Die Frau ohne Schatten (2013) at the Met, a hair-raising challenge that was critically admired. The title role/Elektra followed, including not only Goerke’s widely acclaimed Lyric debut (2012), but also performances in Madrid (role debut), London (Royal Ballet and Opera), San Francisco, Toronto, and Detroit, among other companies. Her Lyric success as Elektra led to similar triumphs with her portrayals of Brünnhilde/Ring cycle; she sang Die Walküre (2017) and Siegfried (2018) here, but the pandemic prevented her from completing the cycle’s last season with Götterdämmerung. Another exciting role debut came during Lyric's 2016/17 season as Goerke starred as Cassandre in the company's first-ever staging of an all-new production of Berlioz's epic Les Troyens.

She has excelled elsewhere in other Wagner roles, such as Ortrud/Lohengrin (Houston, Berlin) and Kundry/Parsifal (Turin). Her long-awaited Isolde has been heard in excerpts, sung in concert with orchestras in Amsterdam, Lucerne, and Washington. Met audiences have acclaimed her Turandot, and she created a sensation at Houston Grand Opera as Eboli/Don Carlo.

Goerke has accustomed her legions of admirers to extraordinarily high standards. Her musicianship is astounding, and — as she showed from the first notes of Elektra at her Lyric debut — she also communicates onstage with blazing intensity, thanks to her consuming, all-encompassing dramatic involvement. The sheer humanity she brings to all her roles colors every phrase heard from the rich, house-filling sound, which leaves any audience awestruck.
