This edition of Donor Serenade, we’re highlighting some of what’s backstage and some of what is yet to come in the 2019/20 Season. Sarah Hatten takes us to the wig and makeup department and tells us about her career, an interview with Sister Helen Prejean gives insight into her journey through Dead Man Walking, and we hear from first year Ryan Opera Center Ensemble member Anthony Reed.
Sarah Hatten is the Marlys Beider Wigmaster and Makeup Designer Endowed Chair for Lyric Opera of Chicago. 2019/20 will be Sarah’s 9th season at Lyric, and she has shared with us defining moments in her career, Lyric memories, and what it takes to work in wigs and makeup!
EmpowerYouth! is an exciting donor-supported, partnership between Lyric Opera of Chicago and the Chicago Urban League that brings together thirty young people from Chicago's south side for a hands-on exploration of performing arts and the creative process. The culminating experience of this intensive, academic-year long program is an original performance presented for the public at a community venue.

The road to The Patrick G. And Shirley W. Ryan Opera Center looks different for each artist who is fortunate enough to be selected as one of approximately 12 Ensemble members in residence at Lyric every season. Some enter the program immediately after finishing undergraduate or master's degrees in voice, and some find their way here after having already started down a different career path. But all of them have distinguished themselves as promising emerging artists with something meaningful to contribute to the art form.
