Facebook Says it's Your Birthday

Let’s celebrate together

At Lyric Opera of Chicago, we are immeasurably grateful for the thousands of donors who contribute each year to help produce our world-class art. Every day, we are amazed by your passion for live musical performance and your creativity in demonstrating that passion. With its widespread reach, sponsoring a Facebook birthday fundraiser is a quick, easy way you can help spread your love of Lyric far and wide.

Technological advances continue to change the way supporters connect with Lyric and the other nonprofits they love by making worldwide philanthropy possible through online crowdfunding programs such as Amazon Smile, GoFundMe, and Kickstarter.

Facebook, an American built social networking company with over 2.38 billion users, is a more recent addition the crowdfunding arena. If you’re a user, you’ve likely seen periodic posts promoting the causes or organizations your friends and family care about on your own newsfeed.

One type of Facebook post that is becoming much more common is a “Birthday Fundraiser” where a user, in lieu of a typical “Happy Birthday!” message, chooses an organization to highlight and then fundraises on its behalf after setting a variety of parameters such as how long they want the fundraiser to last and how much money they would like to raise. Lyric has recently been the beneficiary of several Facebook “Birthday Fundraisers” sponsored by our generous patrons.

With its widespread reach, sponsoring a Facebook birthday fundraiser is a quick, easy way you can help spread your love of Lyric far and wide. Your birthday posts are shared across your social network and can inspire friends and family who are not currently involved with Lyric to learn more about opera. Birthday fundraisers can also be a good way to bring people together to collaborate and make a much larger collective gift than each would be able to make individually—a way for many hands to make light work.

To create a Facebook fundraiser, click on the “Fundraisers” menu item in the “Explore” Facebook section on the left side of your News Feed page. Once you type, and then select, Lyric Opera of Chicago from the list of charities, Facebook will walk you through the rest of the simple set up process.
