AN OPERATIC RENAISSANCE: AMERICAN OPERA SINCE 1980

Next season, the Lyric will introduce three new operas to Chicago audiences. Like most major American opera companies, Lyric sees opera as a living art form with a continuing tradition; yet some operagoers face new work with trepidation. This lecture will offer a primer on musical styles and narrative techniques in contemporary American opera from John Adams and Philip Glass to the present.

About the lecturer
Dr. John M. Clum, is professor Emeritus of Theater Studies and English, Duke University. He received his doctorate in English from Princeton University. During his 42 years on the faculty of Duke University he published 10 books and 80 essays on modern and contemporary drama, film, television, musical theatre and opera. He has directed scores of professional and university theatrical and operatic productions. Recently, he was the librettist for two operas that have had New York premieres. Dr. Clum lives in Chicago where he is Board President of the Raven Theatre.
