Ryan Opera Center Alumnus
The San Antonio-born tenor, a Ryan Opera Center alumnus, has rapidly ascended to international prominence. He is particularly celebrated for Mozart, with recent successes including Tamino/The Magic Flute (Met, Washington, BBC Proms, Glyndebourne, Frankfurt) and Idamante/Idomeneo (Madrid’s Teatro Real). He has also earned acclaim in French roles, among them the Chevalier/Dialogues des Carmélites, a recent role debut at the Met. Portillo, who debuted at the Met as Count Almaviva/The Barber of Seville, has also been heard there as Jacquino/Fidelio, Camille/The Merry Widow, and Eduardo/Thomas Adès’s The Exterminating Angel (company premiere, HD transmission). He sang the featured role of Dr. Richardson in Opera Philadelphia’s unanimously acclaimed world premiere of Missy Mazzoli’s Breaking the Waves. Portillo has performed at Washington National Opera; at the Salzburg, Aix-en-Provence, and Saito Kinen festivals; and in the major houses of Houston, St. Louis, Berlin, Vienna, and Paris. The tenor has appeared in concert with such ensembles as the Kansas City Symphony, Richmond Symphony, and Phoenix Symphony. Portillo can be seen on DVD as Tamino from Glyndebourne and heard on CD as Pedrillo/The Abduction from the Seraglio with the period–instrument orchestra Le Cercle d’Harmonie.
