Join Lyric Opera of Chicago for a captivating exploration of history, reclamation, and artistic innovation as we unpack the profound legacy behind Omar. Grounded in the Pulitzer Prize-winning opera by Rhiannon Giddens and Michael Abels, this unique, peer-led event brings together a dynamic panel of Gen-Z scholars and artists, moderated by Anthony Dante Jones. Together, they will delve into the literary and historical preservation of Omar Ibn Said’s 1831 manuscript — the only known surviving Arabic autobiography written by an enslaved individual in the United States. Beyond the written archive, our panelists will trace how the production achieves a monumental sonic synchronism, blending West African string traditions, Islamic liturgical structures, bluegrass, spirituals, and contemporary orchestration to forge an entirely new American operatic paradigm.

While our panel is made up of members of Gen Z, everyone is welcome to come and hear what the next generation of opera scholars has to say about the art form.
