Opera Insights: The Black Liberation Movement in Classical Music

Join Lyric Opera of Chicago for Opera Insights: The Black Liberation Movement in Classical Music. The event is moderated by University of Michigan music professor Dr. Antonio C. Cuyler and features a panel including composer Ahmed Alabaca, bass-baritone Nicholas Newton, producer and radio host LaRob Rafael, and two members of the composers collaborative known as the Blacknificent 7: Jessie Montgomery and Damien Geter. This dynamic discussion will explore Black characters in opera, Black composers in classical music, and the influence Black music has had in opera in the past, present, and future.

Free and open to the public with advance registration. Registration is not required for ticket holders to the 1/31 performance.

Those who are not attending the January 31 performance of Champion are invited to attend a pre-conversation reception with light refreshments in the Malott Room at 4:00pm, and may then proceed to the theater following the matinee for the panel discussion from 5:00pm-6:00pm.
