Maria Novella Malfatti


Italian soprano Maria Novella Malfatti, a first-year Ryan Opera Center member,debuted in 2020 at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam as Azema/Semiramide, conducted by Michele Mariotti. She sang at Amsterdam’s Dutch National Opera Amsterdam in Kurt Weill’s Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny under the baton of Markus Stenz. During the 2018/19 season, she performed at the Tiroler Festspiele Erl in Austria as Musetta/La bohème, conducted by Paolo Carignani; as soprano soloist in Bach’s St. Matthew Passion, conducted by Martin Sieghart; and in Mahagonny at the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen. Since 2017, Malfatti has performed regularly at the Tiroler Festspiele Erl under the baton of Gustav Kuhn, singing Tamiri/Il re pastore, Musetta/La bohème, Cleone/Ermione, the Shepherd/Tannhäuser, and as the soprano soloist in Bach’s St. Matthew Passion and Christmas Oratorio. Malfatti was a finalist in the 52nd international vocal competition of s'Hertogenbosch, and in 2016, she was awarded third prize at the Ferruccio Tagliavini International Competition for Opera Singers in Deutschlandsberg, Austria. Malfatti graduated cum laude in Master Classical Voice at the Conservatorium in Amsterdam under the tutelage of Sasja Hunnego. Prior to her studies in Amsterdam, she studied voice with acclaimed soprano Janet Perry, and she studied violin at the Conservatorio L. Boccherini in Lucca.

In Lyric’s 2020/21 Season she sings Barbarina/The Marriage of Figaro.
