Moving moments of the 2021/22 Season

Missing opera season? We are too. With two Lyric premieres — Florencia en el Amazonas and Fire Shut Up in My Bones — as well as exciting new productions and role debuts, there were countless memorable moments both onstage and off. In order to tide us over until the fall, here are a few of our favorite highlights from the 2021/22 Season.

Macbeth

Sondra Radvanovsky performs "Una macchia e qui tuttora" from Verdi's MACBETH

Lyric favorite Sondra Radvanovsky shines in her role debut as the devious Lady Macbeth. In the opera's iconic sleepwalking scene, we see her caught in the grasp of a waking dream — or nightmare — unable to soothe her guilty conscience or wash the blood from her hands.

The Elixir of Love

Charles Castronovo performs "Una furtiva lagrima" from Donizetti's The Elixir of Love

In this poignant aria, Nemorino (sung here by tenor Charles Castronovo) sings of the hope he feels in seeing Adina's single, secret tear (Ailyn Pérez) which proves her love for him.

The Magic Flute

In this delightful duet from Mozart's The Magic Flute, the birdcatcher Papageno (Huw Montague Rendall) is united at last with his love, Papagena (Ryan Opera Center soprano Denis Vélez), as they dream a future filled with many, many children.

In the stunning final scene of Daniel Catán's Florencia en el Amazonas, the title character (performed here by Lyric favorite Ana María Martínez) feels her long-lost lover Cristóbal's heart beating in every note she sings.

Fire Shut Up in My Bones

Based on the best-selling memoir by New York Times columnist Charles M. Blow, Fire Shut Up in My Bones follows young Charles, a boy of "peculiar grace," as he finds his place in the world and heals from childhood trauma. In this excerpt, Ryan Opera Center alumnus Will Liverman performs Charles's Act Two aria with Benjamin Preacely as Char’es-Baby.
