Art of Culture

The Art of Culture seeks to expand and deepen your opera experience by bringing cultural history and contemporary artistry into conversation with the stories on stage. Each season, our Education & Engagement team pairs one to three opera titles with artists and curators from across the city to showcase art throughout the Rice Grand Foyer that audiences can engage with during their visit.

Opera is an art form that encompasses multiple artistic disciplines in a single experience. The Art of Culture continues that experience beyond the stage.

Olalekan’s work physically demonstrates the tension between external and internal identity, between ease and tension, as you can see in his piece Resonance with The Inner Man on display along with representation of additional pieces in the Rice Grand Foyer.

Join us for a new exhibit from celebrated Chicago artist and collector Patric McCoy in collaboration with the Chicago premiere of Champion. The exhibit, called “concrete, rose.” is the fourth installment of Patric McCoy’s seminal collection of Black male vernacular photography, curated by Viktor L. Ewing-Givens of Southern Android productions. This archive of images gives a photojournalistic glimpse into both the personal and the political landscape of Chicago’s not-so-distant past. Exhibit hours at Lyric Opera House are Monday through Friday, 9:30 am - 11:30 am, and 2 hours prior to and during every performance of Champion and Cinderella.
