Bringing Moments to Life on Stage

“I want to know that my gift is personally responsible for creating magic on stage.”

Aristotle is quoted as saying “The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.” To be sure, truly great opera is only achievable when each element of production comes together in perfect unity. When the music, costumes, sets, light, and direction culminate in spectacular fashion, we’re moved in a way that only great opera can create.

That said, there are scenes in opera when one costume, set piece, prop, or piece of music is the vital component of shaping that moment. Consider the silver rose in Der Rosenkavalier, Carmen’s seductive Habanera, or Rigoletto’s jester costume. These elements are iconic exemplars from the canon. And like all things in opera, it takes a village of designers, artists, craftsmen, and material to make it just right.

This past season brought us an exciting menu of production elements—the snow falling in La bohème, the flowing blood in the steps of Elektra, the famed anvil chorus of Il trovatore, and more.

When our Technical staff announced their plans to create a giant inflatable dragon to be featured in Siegfried, we knew immediately that the dragon would be captivating to audiences. Upon finding out how much it actually costs to bring that dragon to life, it was determined that this could be a unique sponsorship opportunity for Lyric's most dedicated Ringheads. Ultimately, through the generous support of an anonymous donor and self-professed Wagner-nut, the dragon was paid for in full. In her words:

I’m a lifelong Wagner fan, and Fafner has a special place in my heart. I want to know that my gift is personally responsible for creating magic on stage.

We were so inspired by her incredible gift, and we wondered if there might be more donors who are interested in giving with this intention—to see a production and know that their individual generosity helped bring this moment to life. And so, we’ve created a new giving opportunity for our donors: Angel Opera-tunities.

For next season, we’ve built a slate of these “Angel Opera-tunities” for donors like you to consider staking your claim on. Maybe you’re enchanted by the fragrant cherry blossoms that Cio-Cio-San preparing for Pinkerton’s arrival or you’re moved by the tap-dancing shoes of 42nd Street? Perhaps your darker side is drawn to the macabre puppets of Queen of Spades or the breathtaking finale of Don Giovanni when our seducer descends into hell?
