Ever wish you knew more about an opera before seeing it for the first time? Ever wanted a deeper understanding of an opera you already know and love? The Opera Insider series will give you all that and more in a casual, relaxed, and social environment.
For each opera of Lyric’s season, music historian and opera expert David Buch hosts a session illuminating the work’s creation, its composer, its musical and dramatic highlights, and its particular magic. Each session will also welcome a special guest from Lyric’s Technical Department to share the inner workings of each production, including set and costume design insights, interpretation, stagecraft, and construction. Beyond the Aria Features Owens, Beczała, MkhwanaziOctober 17 at the Harris Theater
Harris Theater’s intimate Beyond the Aria recital series, in association with Lyric Unlimited, continues this season. Join some of Lyric’s favorite voices with pianist Craig Terry, Ryan Opera Center music director and Beyond the Aria artistic director. The next performance is on Monday, October 17, at 7:30pm and features bass-baritone Eric Owens, starring as Wotan in Lyric’s new Ring cycle; tenor Piotr Beczala, starring in Lucia di Lammermoor; and soprano Hlengiwe Mkhwanazi, a member of the Ryan Opera Center who has performed on Lyric’s mainstage.

Lyric Opera of Chicago is proud to partner with the Chicago Architectural Foundation for the fifth consecutive year for Open House Chicago, a free, city-wide, behind-the-scenes look at many of the city’s great places and spaces.
The 6th Annual Open House Chicago is a 48 hour festival from October 15-16. During that weekend, visitors will have access to over 200 buildings across Chicago. Explore repurposed mansions, hidden rooms, sacred spaces, private clubs, iconic theatres, offices, hotels and more—all for free.

In anticipation of the Lyric premiere of Berlioz's Les Troyens (The Trojans), join us at the Art Institute of Chicago for Love and Fate in Virgil's Aeneid and Berlioz's The Trojans. This program will examine Berlioz's monumental opera and its source, The Aeneid, Virgil's epic poem about the adventure of the Trojan hero Aeneas and the founding of Rome. Virgil scholar Vassiliki Panoussi of the College of William and Mary partners with Lyric Opera dramaturg Roger Pines for this fascinating discussion. Attendees will come away with a renewed appreciation of two of the greatest masterpieces of western music and literature and the art they have inspired — works that thrill us with their grandeur and move us with their humanity. This season, enjoy Sing Your Story, a vibrant chronicle of the Community Created Performances that Lyric Unlimited’s Chicago Voices initiative brought to life this fall. Touch Tours and Other Accessible Lyric Performances
Lyric strives to welcome everyone to the Civic Opera House, and this season, we are proud to be offering an audio described performance for each of our productions for blind or low vision patrons, as well as a newly-launched Touch Tour in advance of every audio described performance. Touch tours allow patrons to feel props and costumes, enhancing the opera experience. For patrons with hearing impairment, Lyric is also hosting an American Sign Language interpreted performance for My Fair Lady in May 2017, and offers projected English text above the stage for every performance.
