Lyric Honored with 2017 British-Consul General Award
In recognition of its global thought leadership, Lyric Opera of Chicago has been chosen to receive the 2017 British-Consul General Award. Dr. Stephen J. Bridges LVO, Consul General, stated that “on behalf of the British-American Business Council in Chicago, we are exceedingly happy to recognize the long-standing and ever-increasing thought leadership of Lyric Opera. Its impact is manifest in Chicago, the United States, and internationally.” The Award will be presented to Lyric Opera during the Gala Dinner of the 2017 Transatlantic Conference on May 11 at the Art Institute of Chicago.
In learning of the announcement, General Director Anthony Freud remarked, "On behalf of everyone at Lyric Opera of Chicago, we are extremely honored to receive the 2017 British-Consul General Award. Lyric strives to provide an important cultural service to the city of Chicago and the nation. We are committed to engaging and inspiring large and diverse audiences through the quality and relevance of our work. Opera is the most international of the performing arts and Lyric is proud to present a truly international repertoire, interpreted and performed by major artists from all over the world, attracting a global audience to Chicago and to our opera house. I am particularly thrilled that this award is in recognition of our global thought leadership. Great works of art are transformational in their power to help us understand ourselves, our fellow citizens and our world. Many thanks for this wonderful recognition."

Chorus Master Michael Black Visits CPS Students
Each season, beyond the mainstage work that you may enjoy at Lyric Opera House and around the community, Lyric Unlimited is hard at work bringing music into schools throughout the Chicago region. From Opera in the Neighborhoods to student matinees, there are many ways Lyric Unlimited engages students in learning about music and opera, reaching more than 30,000 students and teachers this season. One example of the positive impact that Lyric Unlimited is making in Chicago Public Schools is through its Residency Programs, opportunities for classrooms to host teaching artists on an ongoing basis throughout the year.
On March 14th, Lyric Chorus Master Michael Black shared his expertise and passion for music in a choral clinic with students at Senn High School, one of two CPS high schools that have received year-long vocal training from a Lyric teaching artist, tickets to the Carmen dress rehearsal, and special guest artist visits. We hope you’ll enjoy the video of this special event.
Here’s to the future of the arts!
