Lyric Opera is excited to announce that Bel Canto, the company's highly-acclaimed commission from composer Jimmy López and librettist Nilo Cruz that had its world premiere last season, will be broadcast on PBS's Great Performances on Friday, January 13 (check local listings). The opera, which was called "an exhilarating event and a compelling reaffirmation of the transcendent power of music" by Opera News, will air nationwide, marking Lyric's first performance on PBS in over 25 years. In honor of this momentous event, Lyric will host a screening of Bel Canto The Opera at the Civic Opera House on Friday, January 13 at 7:30pm. The event is free to the public, but requires tickets. Charlie Parker’s Yardbird — Enjoy a Free Post-Opera Performance from Chicago Jazz Philharmonic

Chicago is buzzing with anticipation about Charlie Parker’s Yardbird, a new American chamber opera that Lyric Unlimited presents in its Chicago debut on Friday, March 24 and Sunday, March 26. The New York Times called the 2015 world premiere “a 90-minute, swift-paced chamber opera with a pulsing, jazz-infused score.” Chicago opera fans are already reserving their seats to see this story of the great jazz saxophonist, starring tenor Lawrence Brownlee as Charlie Parker, Ryan Opera Center alum baritone Will Liverman as Dizzy Gillespie, and soprano Angela Brown as Parker’s mother, Addie. Both performances at the Harris Theater will feature a pre-performance talk an hour before the opera. After the show, audience members will be invited to stay for a performance of Parker’s music by members of Orbert Davis’s Chicago Jazz Philharmonic.
