The Musical Treasures of "The King and I"

The King and I at Lyric Opera of Chicago

“The music is so entrancing, the lyrics so enchanting, the characterizations so rich, that it’s no puzzlement why The King and I endures.” - The Guardian

Who can forget the sight of Anna’s skirt swirling to rapturous music as she dances with the king in the beloved Broadway classic The King and I? Lyric is preparing to present Chicago audiences a thrilling opportunity to hear this Rodgers and Hammerstein classic hit with grand theatrical resources and the exciting sound of a full orchestra and chorus. The large-scale production was announced last month and sent “critics searching for superlatives” at its world premiere at Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris.

Packed with one celebrated and familiar song after another, The King and I is the perfect chance to experience this enchanting music live, and to introduce new generations to a Broadway standard that stands the test of time. “This is the unique and enduring magic of Rodgers and Hammerstein, whose great musicals transport us out of this world while encouraging us to study it more closely,” says USA Today. “More than 60 years on, The King and I still has much to tell us about our differences and shared interests — about all the beautiful and new things we can learn from each other, day by day.”
