Save the Date: Bel Canto the Opera Screening Event on January 13
Lyric Opera is excited to announce that Bel Canto, the company's highly-acclaimed commission from composer Jimmy López and librettist Nilo Cruz that made it's world premiere last season, will be broadcast on PBS's Great Performances on Friday, January 13, 2017 at 8pm (check local listings). The opera, which was called "an exhilarating event and a compelling reaffirmation of the transcendent power of music" by Opera News, will be broadcast nation-wide, marking Lyric's first performance on PBS in over twenty years.
In honor of this momentous event, Lyric will simultaneously host a screening of the Bel Canto the Opera broadcast at the Civic Opera House on Friday, January 13th. The event will be free to the public, but will require tickets. Chicago Voices VIEW and Chicago Voices TALK – Join Us for Special Events
Lyric Unlimited’s Chicago Voices initiative is offering an exciting series of events celebrating Chicago’s rich vocal traditions. Check out what’s new:
Chicago Voices VIEW: Tonight, December 2, three noteworthy photographic exhibitions will open around the city. Curated by graduate students from the School of the Art Institute, the photo exhibitions will pay homage to some of the most creative and influential vocalists in America, all of whom have ties to Chicago. Some of the high-powered artists featured include blues legends Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf; the “Queen of Gospel” Mahalia Jackson; “King of Soul” Sam Cooke; Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder; Wilco singer/ songwriter Jeff Tweedy; and beloved folksinger and songwriter Steve Goodman. Each of the exhibition locations will feature its own unique collection of photographs of vocalists who grew up, lived in, or have ties to the area.
The exhibitions, running concurrently over two months this winter, will be open to the public at these locations:
West Side: Homan Square Community Center
South Side: Ancien Cycles & Café
North Side: Old Town School of Folk Music
Chicago Voices TALK: A series of panel discussions and live performances presented in partnership with the Chicago History Museum, kicks off in January. The talks will focus on Chicago’s colorful vocal history and the pioneers who have contributed to the gospel, classical, and hip-hop musical genres. Ayana Contreras, WBEZ contributor and host of Vocalo’s Reclaimed Soul, will moderate the three panels (held at Chicago History Museum), which will feature music experts, dynamic live performances from local Chicago artists, and Q&A sessions with the audience. The panels will focus on Gospel (January 15, 5pm), Classical (January 24, 7pm), and Hip-Hop (January 31, 7pm).

Opera Insider Series – 2017 Series Reservations Now Open!

For each opera of Lyric’s season, music historian and opera expert David Buch hosts a session illuminating the work’s creation, its composer, its musical and dramatic highlights, and its particular magic. Each session will also welcome a special guest from Lyric’s Technical Department to share the inner workings of each production, including set and costume design insights, interpretation, stagecraft, and construction. Celebrate the glow of the season with enchanting and cherished holiday music as we revisit this CCC tradition. Surrounded by candles and holiday greenery, the rich voices of CCC will ring in the season with contemporary and traditional settings of exquisite carols--what better way to kick off your winter holiday? Beloved settings by choral favorites John Rutter, Alice Parker, and Robert Shaw are just a few of the familiar works on this program. In case that isn't enticing enough, the CCC will also premiere a brand-new arrangement by local composer Wayland Rogers.
