Matthew Dexter

Bass-Baritone

The first-year bass-baritone from McKinney, Texas, recently earned his Master of Music degree in Early Music Voice from Yale University and the Yale Institute of Sacred Music. While at Yale, he performed in Jephtha; Siddhartha, She; and Il martirio di Sant’Orsola. He also sang Raphael/Die Schöpfung on an international tour with Yale Schola Cantorum. As an undergraduate at the University of North Texas, Dexter appeared as Micha/The Bartered Bride, Bartolo/The Marriage of Figaro, Zuniga/Carmen, and The Conductor/Lisa DeSpain’s That Hellbound Train. A vocal fellow at Spoleto Festival USA for two summers, he appeared in the 2022 world premiere of Rhiannon Giddens and Michael Abels’ Pulitzer Prize-winning opera Omar and the 2023 production of Barber’s Vanessa. Competition successes include an Extraordinary Promise award from the 2026 Lotte Lenya Competition and third place and audience favorite award in the 2024 James Toland Vocal Arts Competition. Dexter was a 2025 Grant Park Music Festival Vocal Fellow and has toured twice as a soloist with Apollo’s Fire Baroque Orchestra.

In Lyric’s 2026/27 Season, Dexter will sing Elder Ott/Susannah.
