Heesoo Kim

Clarinet
Heesoo Kim, a native of South Korea, has been appointed Principal Clarinetist of the Lyric Opera of Chicago Orchestra by Music Director Enrique Mazzola.
He made his debut through the Kumho Prodigy Recitals, having won the audition organized by the Kumho Asiana Cultural Foundation. His artistry has been recognized through numerous national competitions in South Korea: he received first prizes in The Music Education News Competition, The Journal of Music Competition, The Korea Herald Music Competition, and the Korean Chamber Music Competition; a second prize in the Busan Music Competition; and a third prize in the prestigious Dong-A Music Competition.
He was also selected as a sponsored artist by the Hyundai-CMK Foundation in South Korea, recognizing both his musical excellence and volunteer contributions early in his career.
He has given clarinet masterclasses at the DePaul University School of Music, reflecting his ongoing interest in music education.
He earned his Bachelor’s degree from Kyung Hee University in South Korea and is currently pursuing his Master’s degree at the University of Southern California, studying under the renowned clarinet pedagogue Yehuda Gilad.
