Alexi Ortega Chavez

Stage Director

During the 2024/25 Season, the Mexican-American director and musician served as the Stage Directing Fellow at the Metropolitan Opera, working on both new and repertory productions of Tosca, Il trovatore, Aida, Fidelio, and Salome. In 2025/26, he returned to the Met as an assistant director on Rolando Villazón’s new production of La Sonnambula and Zeffirelli’s classic staging of La Bohème. A Chicago native and recent graduate of Northwestern University, Chavez holds a Bachelor’s of Music in Voice and Opera Performance and an Ad Hoc in Stage Direction for Opera. While at Northwestern, he was president of the student-run opera company, OPUS, which gave undergraduate students the opportunity to learn, rehearse, and perform in roles both on and off the stage.

In Lyric’s 2026/27 Season, Chavez is assigned to Omar, Don Pasquale, Ariadne auf Naxos, and Susannah.
