  About Wine Auction

The Women’s Board of the world-renowned Lyric Opera of Chicago hosted its highly anticipated Wine Auction Saturday, February 7, 2015 on the famous stage of the Ardis Krainik Theatre of the historic Civic Opera House. The triennial event – led by Erica L. Sandner, Chairman, and Vice Chairman Marilynn Thoma – raised $1.8 million in net proceeds that directly benefits Lyric Opera of Chicago. The evening marked another successful project of The Women’s Board, which has raised more than $4.5 million in the past three months for the opera company.

Wine Auction 2015 welcomed more than 400 guests who share a passion for philanthropy, fine arts and wine collecting. Guests had the opportunity to bid on nearly 230 lots comprised of 1,300 bottles of highly rarified wines and more than 45 luxury travel and dining experiences. Lyric Opera’s wine auctions have now netted nearly $9 million since its 1988 inception. 100 percent of the proceeds go directly to Lyric’s annual campaign, which supports the world-renowned opera company’s activities.

Past Wine Auctions

In early 1987, the leadership of the Women’s Board set out to achieve four important goals:

Engage the entire Women’s Board in a project where they could work together and form lasting relationships and deep connection to Lyric Opera

Bring favorable, new, global media attention to the company, and its world-class productions

Create new audiences, donors, and friends of Lyric Opera

And, by the request of Ardis Krainik, net $100,000 for the project (remember, this is 1987!)

All of the members plunged into the world of wine. One connection led to another, to another, and voila! Robert Mondavi was the first honored guest. The high standard was set in style and substance (an astonishing $218,000 was raised). The ladies never looked back. Twenty-five years after the Wine Auction was born by these creative geniuses, their tradition of innovation and commitment to keeping it fresh and vital remains.

 Song logo

SONG evokes the elegance of opera and the ethereal nature of the voice  producing beautiful sound.

The Women’s Board of Lyric Opera of Chicago is pleased to announce the release of its commemorative wine, SONGTM, in honor of Wine Auction 2015.  The Women’s Board recruited HALL Wines to produce a special wine from their Napa Valley vineyards that would be worthy of the name.  This exclusive offering of 2012 SONGTM Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon evokes the ethereal elegance inspired by the world’s finest opera.  SONGTM is a limited release of 100 stunning, etched magnums. .

Featuring a special blend of fruit from HALL Wines’ exalted Sacrashe Vineyard and historic Bergfeld Vineyard, the commemorative wine sings with velvety tannins and fresh acidity. Rich in dark berry and cassis flavors and born on an opulent structure, SONGTM will gracefully age for 15-20 years.  Praised by critics and wine collectors for consistent excellence in winemaking and hospitality, HALL is a fitting partner for SONGTM.  This very vintage of HALL’s 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon wines has already earned recent ratings of 93-98 points from Robert Parker.

"This wonderful collaboration with Lyric Opera offered us the opportunity to give a new voice to our vineyards," says Owner Kathryn Walt Hall. “ It has allowed us to combine our passions for winemaking and the arts to produce a wine that truly awakens the senses.”

Etched and hand painted at Bergin Glass in Napa Valley and presented in handsome wood boxes, a limited number of SONGTM magnums are available now for $1,000.
