Family Day at Lyric—Another Success!

Saturday, April 6, 2019, was unlike your typical day at the opera house. Filled with children and parents rushing off to activities on every floor of the space for a fun-filled day, Family Day at Lyric built on the success and popularity from last year's inaugural event.

Family Day continues to be the perfect entryway for families to understand and relate to the many elements of opera. Conceived and planned by Lyric staff and with the help of countless volunteers from Bank of America, the Guild Board, Backstage Tour Guides, and more; stations were set up throughout the space where kids could try on costumes, create binoculars and make satchels, explore the orchestra pit with musicians, and even learn about stage combat! The performances on stage elicited lots of laughter, smiles, and applause from families in the audience.

Advance tickets sold out a week before Family Day this year, with over 870 individuals in attendance! 80% of attendees were brand new to Lyric, experiencing the beauty, grandeur, and excitement of the opera house for the very first time.

See what some attendees had to say:

This was a fantastic day. I would highly recommend this to anyone.
I am always on the lookout for fun, educational, entertaining, and affordable activities for my family. Lyric Family Day pretty much covered all of my requirements! Just being inside the Lyric Opera house makes you feel grand. You are transported away from whatever Chicago neighborhood you come from. All the guests are set on the same stage, with the same map and the rest is up to us. Thank you for another wonderful Family Day.

This was my family’s first experience with the opera and we will be subscribing. Thank you.

It was thrilling to see so many new faces in the theater and we hope to see many of them once again next year. Save the date for Saturday, May 16, 2020!
