Welcome to the May issue of Lyric Notes. All of us at Lyric Opera of Chicago hope that this edition of our newsletter finds you well and also finding ways to continue to feel strongly connected to the people, places, and parts of our cultural community we hold most dear.
We have been working hard to make new art to share with you and remind you of the great experiences we’ve all enjoyed together in the opera house. As we all navigate these uncertain times, we find it exciting to continue to plan for the upcoming 2020/21 Season. There’s something really special about the anticipation and planning around important moments in the future and we trust that you are continuing to think about the joys to come.
In this issue, we share some insights into continuing Lyric work, explore the special “At Home” series being produced by artists from The Patrick G. and Shirley W. Ryan Opera Center, take a look back on the season we’ve just shared with you, and look forward to exciting productions to come in the fall.

While artists and audiences everywhere are craving live art, Lyric's Ryan Opera Center is providing the joy of music from their homes! In our Ryan Opera Center From Home series, the Ensemble offers fun favorites to you and yours — from one home to another.
Eight years ago, composer George Benjamin and writer Martin Crimp collaborated on a brilliant new opera, Written on Skin. Major companies were soon producing it and clamoring to know what the duo’s next stage work would be. Thanks to a group of major opera companies joining together on a new co-commission, including Lyric, Benjamin and Crimp's Lessons in Love and Violence received its world premiere in May 2018. The extraordinary new work will have its eagerly awaited North American premiere at Lyric in the upcoming season.
To celebrate #GivingTuesdayNow, a global day of unity taking place May 5, we've put together a video from Lyric staff sending thanks from our homes to yours.
How do we create community when we physically can't be together? Through teamwork, collaboration with our ongoing partners, and the passion of our teens and program facilitators, EmpowerYouth!: Igniting Creativity Through the Arts has been ushered into the digital realm and will continue its weekly sessions.
A thrilling verismo double feature starring two terrific American tenors launches Lyric’s 66th season in September — and we can’t wait to see and hear them take on these riveting roles.
While the end of Lyric’s 2019/20 Season may have been cut short, we’re taking a minute to look back at the incredible performances on our stage this year.
