What Does Opera Mean to You?

If you could only pick one word to describe what opera means to you, personally, what would that word be? Do you find opera “exciting” or “powerful?” Or, maybe it makes you feel “alive” or “fierce” whenever you hear it? Whatever your word is, we want to know more about what draws you to opera and what inspires you to support Lyric.

Tell us what opera means to you, and your response may be featured in our upcoming communications!

Tell us your story

What does opera mean to you?

Opera is PARADISE. When I listen to opera, I am transfixed and blissfully happy. To hear music is to know what is divine and to embrace humanity through the beauty of its expression.

What are you looking forward to this season?

This opera season, I am most excited about Verdi's La traviata because I will be seeing this enduring classic for the first time and I know I can depend on Lyric to ensure a brilliant introduction.

What does opera mean to you?

Opera is EXPANSIVE. It introduces new lands, new languages, history, and art. It presents the dynamic of human relations, across the spectrum of possibility.

What are you looking forward to this season?

I am looking forward to Lyric’s production of West Side Story! In 1986, I took on the role of “Glad Hand” in the University of Notre Dame/Saint Mary’s College production, so the work is an old friend.

What does opera mean to you?

Opera is an EXPERIENCE. It's full of pretty costumes, huge sets and props, and great music. Each time there’s a performance, we have a chance to retool things and find ways to make the opera more interesting, accessible, and topical. As a result, no two productions are ever quite the same.

What are you looking forward to this season?

I'm excited for La traviata! The last time I was near a production of this opera, I was in the wings on the props crew. While it was a fun experience, it didn't really give me the best seat in the house. This time, I’ll be able to see and experience everything as a part of the audience.
