Walter Preucil

Walter Preucil has been a member of the Lyric Opera of Chicago orchestra since 1988. He began his studies in his native Iowa at age 9, and attended the Eastman School of Music and Indiana University, where his teachers included Paul Katz and Janos Starker. The press described Walt's 2002 recital at Carnegie Hall's Weil Recital Hall as "beautifully expressive," and having "color, warmth, and freedom." Walt has twice performed cello concertos with the Peninsula Music Festival orchestra.

As a teacher of the Suzuki talent education method, Walt has taught at several schools, including the Preucil School of Music (Iowa), Lawrence University (Wisconsin) and the Interlochen Arts Camp (Michigan). He has also served as a section coach for the Chicago Youth Symphony, the Music Institute of Chicago Academy, the Schaumburg Youth Orchestra, and High School District 211 (Illinois).

A great fan of chamber music, Walt has treasured the 25 seasons he has performed with Midsummer's Music Festival. In 2013, maestro Sir Andrew Davis appointed Walt Acting Principal Cello of the Lyric Opera of Chicago. He and his wife Stephanie (a violinist) have three sons, all string players
