A recipient of the prestigious Churchill Fellowship and a graduate from the Universities of Sydney and New South Wales with degrees in education, performance and musicology, Michael Black has been chorus master on four continents for more than 110 operas and 50 symphonic works at Lyric Opera of Chicago, Grant Park Music Festival, Opera Australia, Western Australia Opera, Holland Park Opera (UK), Edinburgh Festival, Sydney Symphony Orchestra and Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. His opera career began at Opera Australia as a repetiteur, before becoming Assistant and then Chorus Master at the same company. His repertoire includes opera, symphonic choral works, music theater, and a cappella vocal works. He has worked with many of the world's leading opera and symphonic conductors and his work has been recorded and released on many labels including Chandos, ABC Classic, Melba Records, PBS, and broadcast on radio and in cinemas around the world. Originally from Sydney, Australia Black now resides in Chicago where he is in his seventh season at Lyric.
