On Friday, September 11, at 7:30 p.m., Lyric Opera of Chicago will present a star-studded free outdoor concert at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park.

Sir Andrew Davis, Lyric Opera of Chicago’s music director, will lead the Lyric Opera Orchestra and an array of outstanding soloists including stars from the season Deborah Voigt, Vladimir Galouzine, James Morris, Ana María Martínez, Joseph Kaiser, Kyle Ketelsen, and Lucas Meachem—joined by featured artists from Lyric’s Patrick G. and Shirley W. Ryan Opera Center Katherine Lerner, Amanda Majeski, Amber Wagner and René Barbera.

The “Stars of Lyric Opera at Millennium Park” free concert will be carried live on 98.7WFMT by The Bucksbaum Family Lyric Opera Broadcasts.

The September 11 free concert will feature a superb selection of overtures, arias, and ensembles from Rossini’s Semiramide and The Barber of Seville, Donizetti’s La fille du régiment, Verdi’s Ernani and Otello, Puccini’s La bohème and Tosca, Dvořák’s Rusalka, Offenbach’s Les contes d’Hoffmann, Wagner’s Tannhäuser, Bizet’s L’arlesienne Suite and Carmen, and Gounod’s Faust.

The free outdoor performance will take place in Millennium Park’s Jay Pritzker Pavilion, designed by Frank Gehry

The 2009 free outdoor concert is Lyric’s ninth. This year’s “Stars of Lyric Opera at Millennium Park” concert sponsors are lead sponsor Deutsche Bank, cosponsors The Chicago Community Trust, AT&T, the Elizabeth F. George Preston, 98.7WFMT’s afternoon drive-time program host, and Roger Pines, Lyric’s dramaturg, will host the “Stars of Lyric Opera at Millennium Park” concert broadcast on 98.7WFMT, beginning at 7:15 p.m. on Fri., Sept. 11.
 
Lyric Opera of Chicago opens its 55th season on September 26. The season continues through March 27, 2010, with 77 performances of eight operas: Puccini’s Tosca (Sept. 26–Oct. 13 and Jan. 10–Jan. 29), Gounod’s Faust (Oct. 5–Nov. 7), Verdi’s Ernani (Oct. 27–Nov.23), Janáček’s Katya Kabanova (Nov. 22–Dec. 12), Lehár’s The Merry Widow (Dec. 5–Jan. 16), Donizetti’s The Elixir of Love (Jan. 23–Feb. 22), Berlioz’s The Damnation of Faust (Feb. 20-March 17), and Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro (Feb. 28–March 27).

All of Lyric’s regular-season performances take place at the Civic Opera House, Madison Street and Wacker Drive in Chicago. There are projected English translations for every opera.
