Lyric Opera of Chicago’s Ryan Opera Center ensemble members perform with the Grant Park Orchestra
at the Harris Theater for Music and Dance
Friday, August 5 at 6:30 p.m. and Saturday, August 6 at 7:30 p.m.
Act Two of Donizetti’s Don Pasquale & Act Two of Rossini’s La Cenerentola,
plus Mozart’s one-act The Impresario, narrated by Jack Zimmerman

The talented ensemble members of The Patrick G. and Shirley W. Ryan Opera Center at Lyric Opera of Chicago will be featured with the Grant Park Orchestra for two sparkling evenings of opera excerpts Friday, August 5 (6:30 p.m.) and Saturday, August 6 (7:30 p.m.) in the Harris Theater for Music and Dance.

These “unplugged” all-acoustic performances promise a refreshing contrast to the highly amplified Lollapalooza indie- and alt-rock music festival invasion of Grant Park Aug. 5-7. (Not that there’s anything wrong with that…)

Carlos Kalmar conducts the Grant Park Orchestra, many of whom are also members of the Lyric Opera Orchestra. Excerpts of two rollicking Italian bel canto comedies will be performed – Donizetti’s Don Pasquale and Rossini’s La Cenerentola – plus Mozart’s delightful German one-act opera, The Impresario, with Lyric’s own Jack Zimmerman narrating in English.

All ensemble members of the Ryan Opera Center will participate in the concert. They are: sopranos Emily Birsan, Kiri Deonarine, Jennifer Jakob; mezzo-sopranos Emily Fons, Cecelia Hall; tenors René Barbera,  Bernard Holcomb, James Kryshak; baritones Paul La Rosa, Joseph Lim, Paul Scholten; bass-baritone David Govertsen; and bass Evan Boyer.

Barbera, a third-year ensemble member, just rocked Plácido Domingo’s Operalia competition in Moscow Sunday, winning the three top prizes for opera, zarzuela, and audience favorite.

Concert admission is free on a first-come, first-seated basis for the Aug. 5-6 concerts in the Harris Theater for Music and Dance. (Grant Park Music Festival members will receive priority seating on the main floor.) Free seating is held on the balconies and, if available, in the rear of the main floor. The lobby opens an hour before the concerts and the theater opens 30 minutes before the scheduled concert time. A free open rehearsal will be held at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion Tues. Aug. 2, from 3:00 to 5:30 p.m. For more information, go to
