On Saturday, September 11, at 7:30 p.m., Lyric Opera of Chicago will present a star-studded free outdoor concert at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park. 

Sir Andrew Davis, Lyric Opera of Chicago’s music director, will lead the Lyric Opera Orchestra and an array of outstanding soloists including stars from the season Thomas Hampson, Nadja Michael, Elaine Alvarez, Amber Wagner, Dimitri Pittas, Kyle Ketelsen, and Štefan Kocán – joined by featured artists from Lyric’s Patrick G. and Shirley W. Ryan Opera Center Amanda Majeski, Emily Fons, and René Barbera.

The September 11 free concert will feature a superb selection of overtures, arias, and ensembles from Donizetti’s La favorita, Verdi’s Macbeth, Un ballo in maschera, Simon Boccanegra, and La forza del destino, Puccini’s La bohème, La rondine, and Preludio sinfonico in A major, Op.1, and Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte, Don Giovanni, Cosὶ fan tutte, and Die Entführung aus dem Serail.

The 2010 free outdoor concert is Lyric’s tenth. It will take place in Millennium Park’s Jay Pritzker Pavilion, designed by Frank Gehry. “Stars of Lyric Opera at Millennium Park” concert sponsors are lead sponsor: Deutsche Bank; cosponsors: an Anonymous Donor, AT&T, the Elizabeth F. The “Stars of Lyric Opera at Millennium Park” free concert will be carried live on 98.7WFMT and wfmt.com by The Bucksbaum Family Lyric Opera Broadcasts. George Preston, 98.7WFMT’s afternoon drive-time program host, and Roger Pines, Lyric’s dramaturg, will host the “Stars of Lyric Opera at Millennium Park” concert broadcast beginning at 7:15 p.m. on Sat., Sept. 11.

Additionally, Lyric will post live photos and video clips of the audience and the artists behind the scenes via Facebook and Twitter throughout the evening.

Lyric Opera of Chicago opens its 56th season on Friday, October 1. The season continues through March 27, 2011, with 68 performances of eight operas: Verdi’s Macbeth (Oct. 1-30), Bizet’s Carmen (Oct. 13–29 and March 12-27), Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Nov. 5–23),  Verdi’s A Masked Ball (Nov. 15–Dec. 10), Gilbert & Sullivan’s The Mikado (Dec. 6–Jan. 15), Puccini’s The Girl of the Golden West (Jan. 22–Feb. 21), Wagner’s Lohengrin (Feb.11-March 8), and Handel’s Hercules (March 4–21).

All of Lyric’s regular-season performances take place at the Civic Opera House, Madison Street and Wacker Drive in Chicago. There are projected English translations for every opera.
