Spend your Afternoon at Lyric!

Presented each fall, Lyric's annual Senior Matinee is one of the most popular and widely-attended cultural engagement events in town. Through this free dress rehearsal event, Lyric welcomes 1,800 Chicago seniors from diverse neighborhoods to the Lyric Opera House for an afternoon of world-class opera and positive social enrichment. Senior participants register for a free ticket to the event. Lyric collaborates with the City of Chicago's Department of Family and Support Services – Chicago Area Agency on Aging, which distributes the tickets equally throughout the region.

To enhance seniors' visit to the Lyric Opera House, an English translation of the opera's text is projected above the stage in easy-to-read super-title format. To ensure visiting seniors' needs are met and that all attendees are able to enjoy the performance in a safe and comfortable environment, Lyric offers ready access for people with disabilities. Special accommodations are made for people using wheelchairs or walkers, and handrails are installed on every aisle. Those with hearing impairment are provided assisted-listening devices. A house doctor is always on call in the building in case of emergencies.

This year's Senior Matinee will take place on October 8, 2019 with a performance of Verdi's Luisa Miller, featuring world-class singers and the incomparable Lyric Opera Orchestra and Chorus.

Tickets are available on a first come, first served basis through the Chicago Department of Family & Support Services - Area Agency on Aging. To reserve, contact your nearest Regional Senior Center. You can also call 311 and ask for your nearest senior center.

Lyric's Senior Matinee is made possible with support by the Buehler Family Foundation, the Lannan Foundation, the Shirley and Benjamin Gould Endowment FundThe Retirement Research Foundation, and The Siragusa Family Foundation.
