Lyric Unlimited's new opera for families with children ages 7 to 12, Second Nature, from American composer Matthew Aucoin, enjoyed four world-premiere performances at Lincoln Park Zoo in August. The Chicago Tribune lauded the opera as “absorbing and inventive” and “full of whimsical touches.”
Set in a future when humans have retreated from nature because of the deteriorating environment, this 45-minute opera tells the story of two inquisitive and courageous youths who decide to leave the safety of their artificial habitat and work to heal the planet.
Chicago-area families have another chance to see this exciting new work this fall on Saturday, October 17 at 2pm. Admission is free! Reservations are recommended as seats will go quickly. A limited number of tickets will be available at the door. Join us for this family program!

Lyric Opera of Chicago is proud to partner with the Chicago Architectural Foundation for the fourth consecutive year for Open House Chicago, a free, city-wide, behind-the-scenes look at many of the city’s great places and spaces.
75,000 visitors attended Open House Chicago 2014. The 5th annual Open House Chicago will take place on October 17-18, 2015. During that weekend, visitors will have access to over 200 buildings across Chicago. Explore repurposed mansions, hidden rooms, sacred spaces, private clubs, iconic theatres, offices, hotels and more—all for free.
Lyric Opera will open the doors to the Civic Opera House on Saturday, October 17 from 9am – 4:30pm, including a brief performance by members of The Patrick G. and Shirley W. Ryan Opera Center at 1pm.
CD SIGNING WITH ISABEL LEONARD AND LAWRENCE BROWNLEEOctober 30 from 5-6pm (After the final Cinderella!)
Fans are invited to stay after the final Cinderella (La Cenerentola) matinee on Friday, October 30 at 2pm – or stop by the Civic Opera House from 5pm if you aren’t attending the performance – to meet the stars of the performance when soprano Isabel Leonard and tenor Lawrence Brownlee will do a CD signing in the Rice Grand Foyer. CDs will be available for sale, but no purchase is necessary to meet and greet or get an autograph with one or both of these bel canto sensations!
TEN: A SEASON OF CREATIVE WOMEN AT LYRIC EXHIBITEnjoy Lyric’s New Exhibit During Every Performance
If you’ve ventured down the stairs from the Rice Grand Foyer to the Opera Club Wine Cellar on the lower level of the Civic Opera House in recent seasons, then you know that in addition to a great bar, this space has become a vibrant space for Lyric Opera exhibits. This season, enjoy TEN: A Season of Creative Women at Lyric, a new exhibit that honors the acclaimed careers of ten women directors and designers of the 61st Season through featured photographs, renderings, costumes, videos, and other memorabilia. The creative artists featured in the exhibit are directors Barbara Gaines and Susan Stroman, production designer Vicki Mortimer, costume designers Sue Blane, Jane Greenwood, Constance Hoffman, Susan Mickey, and Catherine Zuber, and lighting designers Paule Constable and Jennifer Tipton.

BEYOND THE ARIAHarris Theater in Association with Lyric Unlimited
The Harris Theater presents its second season of Beyond the Aria in association with Lyric Unlimited beginning on October 12. Enjoy internationally celebrated opera singers of Lyric’s mainstage season alongside rising stars from The Patrick G. and Shirley W. Ryan Opera Center. The first performance on October 12 at 7:30pm features The Marriage of Figaro stars Amanda Majeski and Luca Pisaroni alongside Ryan Opera Ensemble member Jonathan Johnson. OPERA BUS OFFERS NORTH SHORE TRANSPORTATION FOR $20
Starting in 2015/16, Lyric Opera is pleased to launch motor-coach service from a central North Shore location for weekday matinee performances. Park at a Northbrook Court shopping mall and enjoy a round-trip transportation to the Civic Opera House for just $20!

The bus will depart at 11:15am and arrive at the Civic Opera House in time for patrons to enjoy lunch or the pre-opera talk that starts at 1pm before 2pm matinee curtain time. (Please note: There will be a special 10:15am departure time on March 10 in order to arrive by 12pm for Der Rosenkavelier, which has an early 1pm curtain.)
