Martha Grant
Martha Grant
Co-Vice President

About Martha: Martha Grant is our sitting Co-Vice President with Shannon Shin, and has been a member of the Lyric Young Professionals since 2010. What she enjoys the most about being an LYP are the opportunities to continually learn more about opera, and the ability to meet others who share her passion of this unparalleled art form. Her favorite Lyric performance to date is Das Rheingold and her favorite composer is Puccini.

As part of the LYP Executive Committee, Martha is an ex-officio member of Lyric's Ryan Opera Center Board. By day, Martha works in Global Treasury Services at EY and, in addition to opera, loves to travel. In fact, she often combines the two and is very much looking forward to attending Bayreuther Festspiele this coming summer!

Shannon Shin
Shannon Shin

About Shannon: An opera fan from the age of four (when she listened to the complete Ring cycle with her father), Shannon Shin is an attorney at Dentons, where her practice focuses on complex commercial litigation and counseling clients in responding to state and federal investigations, regulatory actions and other inquiries. Her legal experience includes drafting an amicus curiae brief in support of Petitioners in the landmark Supreme Court decision Whole Women’s Health v. Hellerstedt and presenting oral argument before the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals. Additionally, she has presented seminars on state attorneys general investigations and insurance coverage matters. Shannon earned undergraduate degrees from Johns Hopkins University and the Peabody Conservatory of Music, followed by a graduate degree from the University of Oxford and a law degree from the University of Michigan. Tania Tawil
Tania Tawil
Events Chair

About Tania: Tania Tawil serves on the Executive Committee of the Lyric Young Professionals board as Events Chair. Tania attended her first Lyric performance in 1996 and has been a subscriber ever since. A longtime arts lover, Tania believes in the importance of supporting and cultivating talent and interest in opera and is thrilled to be giving back to Lyric through her work on the LYP board, planning events like the highly acclaimed annual Halloween Masquerade. Tania earned a double B.A. in Telecommunications and French from Indiana University in Bloomington, IN, where she received the first annual Dana Thompson Rising Star Award. Presented by the Women in Cable Telecommunications Chicago Chapter, the award launched her early cable television career in affiliate sales and marketing for new and emerging networks for both Comcast and FOX. Her time in cable ignited her passion for creating dynamic, cross-channel experiences that realize and deepen the connection between consumers and brands through compelling content, a subject she pursues today in her role as VP of Channel Partner Development at Vibes, a leading mobile marketing and technology company based in Chicago. Having worked at Vibes for over 10 years, Tania runs teams to help Vibes clients and partners successfully navigate and leverage fast-paced mobile technology to connect meaningfully with their customers. Tania lives in the heart of downtown Chicago with her husband, and when not working or seeing amazing operas at Lyric, they enjoy traveling to new and favorite destinations to spend time skiing, scuba diving and experiencing the local culture and people.

Fritzi Getz
Fritzi Getz

Fritzi currently serves on the Lyric Young Professionals Board as a Member-at-Large. Her parents discovered their love of opera as young adults, and Fritzi, having inherited their enthusiasm, enjoys being an ambassador for the art form in Chicago. Fritzi is an attorney in the Financial Institutions Group of Barack Ferrazzano Kirschbaum & Nagelberg LLP where she represents financial institutions in the sale and acquisition of businesses, capital raise transactions and in connection with the review and negotiation of business contracts. She also serves on the board of directors of Project Onward, a Chicago nonprofit that provides vocational and other support to adult artists with disabilities pursuing studio art careers. Having found that art truly does “wash away from the soul the dust of everyday life” (quoth Picasso, if the Instagram posts can be trusted), she’s grateful to have found a diverse community of opera supporters to share in the exploration of the dynamic and inexhaustible world of opera.

Marne Smiley
Marne Smiley
Member at Large

About Marne: Marne feels at home with her LYP family. The more people she met who are involved with the opera, the more she wanted to contribute. She felt like the people who love opera have a curiosity about the world, whether it be traveling, community involvement, or language. She could feel the many countless and unnoticed hours that go into the opera and she really connected with that. She really loves the opera, but most importantly she loves what it brings out in the people involved in it.

In her non-opera life she is an entrepreneur, passionate about life and the people in it. She has a marketing and consulting agency, where she helps people and companies become better version of themselves. She currently serves on the Board of Governors at the Mid-America Club and is Co-Chair of the Philanthropy group at Union League. She is also an active member the Otoe-Missouria tribe and is starting a non-profit focused on homelessness. She climbs mountains, races mountain bikes, runs, has a few Chicago-to-Mackinaw sailing races under belt, and does not drink caffeine.

JJ Williams
JJ Williams
Member at Large

About JJ: JJ has three passions in life - cars, food, and music - and has been fortunate to be able to capitalize on all three. In a former life he owned a rare & semi-exotic automobile sales company, and he is currently building a vegan food business. His involvement with LYP has provided him with the opportunity to capitalize on his third passion for music. Not only has JJ been able to amplify his knowledge of opera, but more importantly, he has had the pleasure to share many great experiences with people who are passionate about music in their own unique ways. Regarding JJ's experience with opera, the first opera he saw was Verdi's Aida at the age of 9 - the production included live animals and was so magical. In total, JJ has seen between 15 and 20 operas.

Lauren Wood
Lauren Wood
Member at Large

About Lauren: Lauren Wood joined the Lyric Young Professionals in 2014, just a few months after moving to Chicago from her native Atlanta. While looking online for volunteer opportunities that might let her step onto the famed Lyric Opera stage without having to sing or perform, she discovered the LYPs and has been a passionate advocate ever since. Lauren works in advertising by day (and often night), writing songs about cleaning supplies and poetic paeans to various prescription medications. She has no professional opera experience, but will weep and tweet upon hearing Leontyne Price sing Verdi.
