Lyric Opera of Chicago to hold dancing/singing auditions for Franz Lehár’s The Merry Widow Saturday, May 30 at the Civic Opera House

Lyric Opera of Chicago is auditioning highly-trained female dancers who sing and highly-trained male dancers (details below) for its upcoming production of The Merry Widow by Franz Lehár. This new
production will be directed by Gary Griffin with choreography by Danny Pelzig, assisted by ballet mistress August Tye. It will be sung in English.

Rehearsals begin November 9 with eleven performances running from December 5, 2009, through January 16, 2010 (with a performance break December 21-January 3).

The Merry Widow requires 12 soloistic dancers (6 female/6 male) with two covers (1 female/1 male). The men will be hired as Solo Dancers and should have strong classical ballet training plus modern dance experience.

The women must also have strong classical ballet training and modern dance experience, but will be hired as Solo Bit Principal Artists. They will appear as Can-Can Girls who perform a “song and dance” number sung in a classical (not Broadway “belt”) style. A specific sung excerpt from this production will be required from all women. Music will be provided in advance to all women interested in auditioning. A pianist will be provided.
