On Saturday, October 15, 8 a.m. to midnight OPERATHON 2011, Lyric Opera of Chicago’s 32nd annual radio marathon fundraiser, will be broadcast live on 98.7WFMT. The fundraising goal for the day is $425,000, with all proceeds going to Lyric Opera’s education and community-engagement programs.
Lyric’s new general director, Anthony Freud, will make his Operathon debut. Several Lyric stars will make on-air appearances throughout the fundraiser in person or by phone, including Renée Fleming, Lyric’s Creative Consultant and Operathon catalog “cover girl”; Sir Andrew Davis, Lyric’s music director; The Tales of Hoffmann stars Matthew Polenzani, James Morris, and Anna Christy; Lucia di Lammermoor stars Susanna Phillips and Giuseppe Filianoti, and conductor Massimo Zanetti; title-role stars Amber Wagner/Ariadne auf Naxos and Sondra Radvanovsky/Aida; and Show Boat director Francesca Zambello.

OPERATHON 2011 is hosted by Lyric and its 15 Chapters with Dorothy Kuechl (Northwest Chapter) and Peggy Beata (Near North Chapter) serving as co-chairs. The Operathon committee along with 150 Lyric Opera Chapter members volunteer their time to staff the various tasks that day to make this event such a success.
