Lyric Opera of Chicago
seeks supernumeraries for 2011-12 season
to portray dandies, henchmen, gravediggers, soldiers,
policemen, nobles, servants, watchmen, animals,
priests, nymphs, throne bearers, Ethiopian prisoners, and more!

All auditions take place in the Civic Opera House, 20 N. Wacker Dr.
(Use stage door entrance at corner of Washington St. and Wacker Dr.)

Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor 
Director: Catherine Malfitano                                  
Audition date: Saturday, September 17 2pm    
6 men will play:
2 henchman (tough, burly men who should have developed calves because they’ll wear kilts)
2 dandies (more elegant, refined types)
2 gravediggers (tough, burly types like the henchmen)
All should be close to 6 feet tall.

Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov                        
Director: Julia Pevzner
Audition date: Friday, October 14 5:30pm           
28 men will play: soldiers, policemen, pilgrims, priests and noblemen
8 women will play: noblewomen
5 girls and 5 boys will play: nobles’ children

Mozart’s The Magic Flute
Director: Matthew Lata
Audition date Saturday, November 12 11am 
17 men will play: watchmen, priests and servants of Monastatos.
3 young women will play: nymphs
6 boys and 6 girls will play: villagers and children of Papageno and Papagena.
5 men or women will play: a snake, a dinosaur, an ape, a bear, and a bird.
6 smaller men, women or teenagers will play: 2 lions and a rhinoceros.

Verdi’s Aida
Director: Matthew Lata
Audition date: Friday, December 2 5pm    
66 men will play: soldiers, throne bearers and Ethiopian prisoners
25 women will play: Ethiopian prisoners
Audition date: Friday, December 2 6pm 
7 children will play: Ethiopian prisoners         

Jerome Kern’s Show Boat      
Director: Francesca Zambello
Audition date: Monday, January 2 6pm

4 African-American girls and 4 African-American boys, 1 Caucasian girl and 2 Caucasian boys
7-11 years old.

  • Adult supernumeraries (“extras”) are unpaid volunteers and receive $15.00 per each rehearsal and performance call to offset transportation expenses. 
  • Child supernumeraries are unpaid volunteers and may apply for a grant to offset transportation expenses incurred for rehearsal and performance calls (applicable grant award may vary by production based on required time commitment, but in no case will any grant exceed $250.00).
  • Attendance at all rehearsals and performances is mandatory.
