Lyric Opera of Chicago’s Guild Board of Directors celebrates its 27th Fantasy of the Opera in the Civic Opera House, 20 N. Wacker Drive., on Saturday, February 5, 2011, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Fabulous food! Terrific music! Great friends! The Fantasy of the Opera is presented by the Lyric Opera Guild Board of Directors, and has been heating up Chicago’s winter social scene for 27 years while raising important funds to benefit Chicago’s own world-renowned opera company. It’s one of Lyric’s most exciting and elegant events – truly “the hottest party in the coldest month.” This year’s theme will add a little mystery and whimsy to the evening!

Guests at the $400 per-person black-tie fundraiser will begin the evening with specialty “Masquerade” cocktails or champagne and gourmet hors d’oeuvre prepared by some of the region’s top restaurants: The American Club Resort (Kohler, WI), Ara On, Carnivale, Coco Pazzo, Devon Seafood Grill, Il Mulino, Lloyd’s Chicago, Lockwood, N9NE Steakhouse, The Sarah and Peer Pedersen Room, Piccolo Sogno, Prosecco, Province, and Sepia.

This season’s Fantasy Raffle features American Airlines (Lyric’s official airline) first-class worldwide round trips for two to any AA destination, business-class worldwide roundtrips for two to any AA destination, and business-class roundtrips for two to Shanghai.

This season’s Fantasy Silent Auction (held in the Nancy W. Knowles Lobby) features the latest in electronic toys plus an enticing array of weekend getaways, luxury items, sports-event tickets, opera tickets and memorabilia, and more. For the first time this year, guests will be able to bid electronically using their personal communication devices or one provided for the evening.

The Cabaret performance in the Ardis Krainik Theatre begins at 8 p.m. and features stars of Lyric’s current and previous seasons. Music Director Sir Andrew Davis will serve as Master of Ceremonies.  Nicole Cabell (Carmen), David Cangelosi (The Girl of the Golden West), David Daniels (Hercules, A Midsummer Night’s Dream), Marcello Giordani  (Girl/ West),  Philip Kraus (Girl/ West),  Lester Lynch (Lohengrin), Eric Owens (Hercules), Wilbur Pauley (Girl/ West),  Amber Wagner (Lohengrin), and members of The Patrick G. and Shirley W. Ryan Opera Center will perform selections from the great American songbook and Broadway classics.

After the Cabaret, guests will enjoy a festively elegant seated dinner prepared by Calihan Catering. At 10 p.m. the “Dessert Fantasy” commences, with tasting stations in the American Airlines Mezzanine and in the Opera Club. Liqueurs and specialty coffees will be served, along with sweet indulgences courtesy of Beijo de Chocolat, Blommer Chocolate, Chicago RAW, Delightful Pastries, e.leaven Food Company, One North Kitchen & Bar, and Sweet Miss Givings.
