Sir Andrew Davis, Amber Wagner, Cecelia Hall summoned to Valencia
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Tuesday, December 13, 2011
Lyric Opera to the rescue! Music director Sir Andrew Davis,
soprano Amber Wagner, and mezzo-soprano Cecelia Hall
summoned to Valencia, Spain, for concert performances of
Richard Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos Dec. 16 & 18 –
the day after final performance in Chicago
Due to late cancellations by principal artists, Lyric’s music director Sir Andrew Davis, former Ryan Opera Center member Amber Wagner, and first-year Ryan Opera Center member Cecelia Hall delayed year-end holiday plans and flew to Valencia, Spain, to participate in concert performances of Richard Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos at El Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía.
Sir Andrew was engaged in late November to replace conductor Riccardo Chailly for the two concert performances on Dec. 16 and 18.
Late last week, while Lyric was still in the midst of its Ariadne run, Hall was engaged by the highly regarded Valencia opera company to sing the Composer, the role she understudied at Lyric.
Wagner, who portrayed the Prima Donna and Ariadne at Lyric, was engaged soon after to replace Adrianne Pieczonka in the Valencia concerts with Orquestra de la Comunitat Valenciana – the same soprano Wagner replaced on short notice last spring with the Canadian Opera Company. Davis and Hall flew to Valencia on Sunday following the final Ariadne matinee; Wagner followed on Monday.
The Lyric artists join an international roster that includes soprano Julia Bauer/ Zerbinetta, tenor Nikolai Schukoff/Tenor, Bacchus, and baritone Carlos Alvarez/Music Master.
