seeks dozens of supernumeraries
to portray ancient Egyptian soldiers, thronebearers, Ethiopian prisoners & more in Verdi’s AIDA –
the grandest of grand operas!  

Friday, December 2 – 
women and children @ 5pm, men @ 6pm

for performances Jan. 21, 25, 28, 31; Feb. 3, 8; Mar. 6, 10, 15, 19, 22, 25  

On Friday, December 2, Lyric Opera of Chicago will audition male and female adult and child supernumeraries for Aida, Giuseppe Verdi’s spectacular grand-opera drama. Supernumeraries, called “supers” for short, are non-speaking, non-singing roles.

At 5:00pm Lyric will cast 25 women to play Ethiopian prisoners and 7 boys and/or girls between 6 and 11 years old to play children of Ethiopian prisoners.

At 6:00pm Lyric will cast 66 men to play the following:

12 throne bearers – Must be strong.

30 red soldiers

16 black soldiers

4 Ethiopian prisoners

2 attendants

2 oarsmen

These are non-singing, non-speaking roles. Men should come to the audition prepared to march in tempo. Ethiopian prisoners are required to kneel and crawl onstage. All supers should be able to follow and remember stage directions.

Aida will be presented in performances Jan. 21-Feb. 8 and Mar. 6-25. You must be available for all scheduled rehearsals and performances to be considered. See schedule below. Any updates to the schedule will be available at the audition.

Adult supers are unpaid volunteers. A $15.00 honorarium is provided for each rehearsal and performance attended to offset expenses that may be incurred.

Child supers are unpaid volunteers under the age of 16. Child supers may apply for an education grant from The Patrick G. and Shirley W. Ryan Opera Center to assist with expenses that may be incurred related to their participation in Lyric productions. The grant award is generally based on $10.00 per rehearsal and performance attended. The maximum grant award in any case may never exceed $250.00.

The audition will be held at the Civic Opera House, 20 N. Wacker Drive.

Enter the building at the stage door on Wacker Drive near Washington Street.

Be prepared to show a current government-issued photo ID.

Women and children arrive no later than 4:45pm to sign in.

Men arrive no later than 5:45pm to sign in.
