STUDENT MATINEE
Grades 7 – 12
Photo by Dan RestNo experience better conveys the grand visual, musical, and dramatic scale of world-class opera theater than a fully staged performance at the Civic Opera House. For 43 years, Lyric has presented reduced-price performances of an opera from the current Lyric season for students in grades 7–12. Attending one of our matinees may be part of an extensive opera unit or merely an initial exposure to this wonderful art form. Either way, students are dazzled by the glamorous and opulent opera house, the magnificence of the Lyric Opera Orchestra and chorus, the amazing sets and costumes illuminated by state–of–the–art lighting design, and the beautiful voices of talented young emerging stars of tomorrow in the lead roles. Each performance is accompanied by English titles projected above the stage, and study guides are provided to teachers and students in preparation for attending the opera. The study guides include a synopsis of the opera, biographical information on the composer and librettists, and historical background and social implications of the characters and period in which the opera was written.
Please check back in August for information on our 2008/09 Student Matinee.
Students are encouraged to dress up for the occasion. Proper audience etiquette is expected of all students and teachers attending the matinees. Click here for a list of opera house do's and don'ts.
