Anthony Freud, general director of Lyric Opera of Chicago, announced today the repertoire, principal singers, conductors, directors, and designers for Lyric's 2013-14 season. Joining Mr. Freud for today's announcement were Lyric's music director Sir Andrew Davis and Lyric's creative consultant Renée Fleming.

Lyric’s 2013-14 subscription season will offer 67 total performances of eight different operas:

         Giuseppe Verdi's Otello

         Giacomo Puccini's Madama Butterfly

         Richard Wagner's Parsifal

         Giuseppe Verdi's La Traviata

         Johann Strauss, Jr.'s Die Fledermaus

Gioachino Rossini's The Barber of Seville

         Antonín Dvořák's Rusalka

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's La Clemenza di Tito

Ted Chapin, president and executive director of Rodgers and Hammerstein: an Imagem Company, attended the season announcement to celebrate Lyric’s new American Musical Theater Initiative. The initiative will launch after the current opera season with a new production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Oklahoma!, and it will continue in the spring of 2014, with Rodgers and Hammerstein’s The Sound of Music.

Lyric’s 59th season will embody fully the company’s motto, Long Live Passion. “Passion," said Mr. Freud this afternoon, "is the essence of opera – musically and dramatically. There is no more thrilling, more revelatory, more entertaining art form than opera. At its best, opera delivers tidal-wave impact, overwhelming emotion, visceral excitement. It enables us to understand ourselves, our fellow human beings, and our society."
